Family-owned, the Montemaggio Estate is located in Radda in Chianti in the heart of Chianti Classico region. It is situated where once a 14th-century tower stood above the old Roman road between Siena and Florence in Italy.
Montemaggio also is featured on a map, dating back to 1560, of the “Captains of the Guelph Party” that is housed in the Podesteria di Radda (City Hall). The name Montemaggio derives from “Monte Maggiore” (Big Mountain), which indicates its elevated position.
The estate, which is a member of the Consortium of Chianti Classico, extends over an area of 70 hectares (about 190 acres) of vineyards, olive groves and woods; it is situated at a high altitude of 450 to 600 meters above the sea level. The vineyards, which is comprised of 8 hectares (20 acres) has a central position in the estate with an exposure to southwest of remarkable importance. The soil is rich on galestro, sandstone, and alberese. The main grape varieties in our vineyards are Sangiovese, with small additions of Merlot, Pugnitello, Chardonnay, Malvasia Nera, and Ciliegiolo.
The particular position of the estate combined with the micro-climate, makes it possible for Montemaggio to offer a wide variety of products. These products are the following: Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, Torre di Montemaggio IGT, Quinta Essentia di Montemaggio IGT, Ilaia di Montemaggio IGT, Rosé di Montemaggio IGT, Chardonnay di Montemaggio IGT, la Grappa e l’ Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Montemaggio follows the concept of a very high quality “Terroir” wine. We have a chance to look at the quality of wine in every bottle and make sure that customer gets a very special product. The wines have been planted with a very high density per hectare (6250 plants/hectare in some vineyards). We then produce a lower quantity of grapes per hectare (35-60 Ql/hectare, depending on the vintage), by regulating it through pruning and selection techniques.
The most used vine training systems are cordone speronato (spurred cordon), alberello (head-trained bush vine), and guyot.
These characteristics, in addition to the exposure (south – south west), the slopes, the micro-climate, the soil and the hard and accurate work done, guarantee the production of excellent and authentic Tuscan wines. See the latest photos of our vineyards here.
During the harvest, every bunch undergoes considerable selection in the vineyard and later again in the vinery. Harvest is carried out manually, and only when the grapes are perfectly ripe. Therefore, it could be said that Fattoria di Montemaggio’s wines are 100% hand-made, and they preserve all the quality of the elements that are a part of the land where they have been cultivated.
Furthermore, Montemaggio is a certified organic estate since 2009, which means we produce pure organic wine. We practice organic agriculture and thus cultivation is carried out with the maximum respect for the nature, without introducing any foreign or chemical element that can damage the environment.

If you’re going to do a wine tour in Chianti then do this one!
My wife and I were looking for something a little different, personal, educational and interesting. We were thoroughly impressed by Montemaggio, a beautiful place down a long winding gravel trail (don’t bring your Ferrari!) to a lovely small peaceful vineyard.
Francesco was an incredibly well versed and knowledgeable guide, taking our group through all the elements of vinticulture. The blind tasting additional part was very helpful, learned so much and cannot be more grateful or recommend this highly enough!

My family of 10 did a cooking class paired with wine tasting and it was such an intimate and personal experience! Our chef and sommelier were both personable and great at explaining the steps / pairings of wine and food. We made a 3 course meal and tried about 5-10 wines in the process. My only constructive criticism is we planned for a 3.5 hour experience but this easily could have taken 5 hours. We had to skip out on the tour of the property because we had made prior reservations for another winery and we’re upset to miss out on all this winery had to offer. Be sure to plan accordingly with time! Finally – this is a female owned and managed winery (look at the bottle it displays a woman!) and I loved that they made sharing this a priority.

Amazing wine tasting experience to this beautiful Cantina right in the middle of charming Chianti’s Hills. Francesco was an outstanding host which let us dive inside the wine making secrets and making us appreciate some of the most delightful wines of the Fattoria Montemaggio. Definitely worth the experience!

What a wonderful experience. I have been to many wineries I’m California and just two others in Italy, but this one is not to be missed. Francesco was our guide, and his enthusiasm to all things wine and the process of is inspiring. The price of the tasting was very ideal amd the quality of the wine matches the descriptions the guide gave. Looking forward to do the blind tasting. They even produce their own beauty products with their garden ingredients.

Great tour, very detailed and explained process more than other tours will go on. We did the blind tasting also which was fun at the end. Francisco and the team there are very easy to get a long with and explain things to wine drinkers but not experts like myself very well. I would highly recommend.
FYI, to get there, will be 5-10 min dirt road to get there. Have to book tour on website to get into the gates. They do not do tours by walk in.

They accommodated our group of 35 people. Ilaria, the manager, was a fantastic tour host and Francesco, Sommelier, was a knowledgeable and gracious host. We must have bought a pallet of wine for them to ship to us in the U.S.
Highest recommendation!

We had a wonderful experience at this winery today. The tour and tasting with Francesco was excellent. We got to learn about growing grapes in an organic vineyard. We got to wander through the vines and the gardens. The tasting was such a wonderful way to end our time there. Tours and tastings are by appointment and I can highly recommend.

Eduardo gave us such a fun and educational tour. He made us feel very welcome and taught us so much about their organic wine making process. The care and attention they show to visitors, their environment, and their wine will ensure all the growth in years to come. Wishing them all the best. A definite must visit for a more intimate experience in Chianti.
